Mandatory For Admission To Practice After January 1, 2006
Every applicant to the Second Judicial Department seeking admission to the practice of law after January 1, 2006, must successfully complete the
Orientation to the Profession Program before being admitted. This requirement
applies to applicants who have passed the bar examination, applicants transferred from other Judicial Departments, and out-of-state attorneys seeking admission on motion. The program must be taken within one year prior to the date of admission
(see 22 NYCRR 690.21). The 3-hour
orientation program on the subject of professional ethics and related topics is administered by the Office of Special Counsel for Grievance Matters.
Only those applicants who have been certified by the NYS Board of Law Examiners as having passed
the NYS bar examination, or who have a pending application before
the Appellate Division to be admitted on motion, are permitted to
attend the orientation program. Applicants who have passed the bar
examination need not wait until their application papers for admission
are filed before registering for the orientation program. For further
information on the orientation program and registration please see the
registration instructions.
