Job Overview

Responsibilities

Court officers are peace officers who are required to wear uniforms and carry firearms.

They are charged with law enforcement, and maintaining order within court facilities statewide.

Court officers also execute bench warrants and make arrests.

Qualifications

To be appointed to the Court Officer-Trainee title, candidates must be:

  • At least 20.5 years of age
  • A United States citizen
  • A New York State resident
  • Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Possess a valid New York State Driver’s License
     

Salary & Benefits

New York State Court Officer-Trainees enter the academy at Judicial Grade 16.

After successful completion of a two-year traineeship, court officers automatically promote to Judicial Grade 19.

As of March 30, 2023, the salary range for these two grades from hiring rate to maximum may be $54,768 to $87,451.

 

First Step To Apply

Complete the Written NYS Court Officer-Trainee Exam

Post-Written Examination Screening Process

Candidates who are successful on the written examination will be notified in order of their rank number on the eligible list when to begin the screening process.
 

Phase 1: Physical Ability Test, Vision Test, Fingerprints

Phase 2: Written Psychological Tests, Background Investigation

Phase 3: Psychological Interview, Evaluation Board

Phase 4: Pre-Appointment Medical Exam, Appointment to Academy
 

Candidate Screening Process Phase Details

Career Advancement

Court officers have an opportunity to be assigned to specialized units such as the Special Response Team (SRT), Mobile Security Patrol (MSP), and Command Center Operations. Officers assigned to specialized details undergo additional law enforcement training.

In addition to the opportunity to participate in specialized assignments, court officers can advance their careers through promotion to higher ranked positions within the Court Officer Title Series.

Court Officer Title Series:

  • Court Officer-Sergeant (promotional exam)
  • Court Officer-Lieutenant (promotional exam)
  • Court Officer-Captain
  • Court Officer-Major
  • Assistant Chief Court Officer
  • Deputy Chief Court Officer
  • Chief Court Officer

Promotional opportunities are available within the Court Officers Academy, Applicant Background Investigation Unit, and the Department of Public Safety.

Candidates are offered assignment in:

  • Nassau & Suffolk Counties
  • 3rd Judicial District
  • 4th Judicial District
  • 5th Judicial District
  • 6th Judicial District
  • 8th Judicial District
  • 9th Judicial District

Court Officers are currently not assigned to the 7th Judicial District.
