General information

The Office of Court Interpreting Services (CIS ) assists in the development and implementation of policies and best practices that support the NYS Unified Court System's (UCS) commitment to ensure that persons with Limited English Proficiency (LEP), or who are deaf or hard of hearing, have equal access to the courts and available court services. CIS is responsible for ensuring that prompt, accurate and consistent foreign language and sign interpretation and translation are provided in a manner that complies with UCS policies and procedures.

CIS administers the UCS electronic scheduling application, manages statistical reporting systems, maintains the statewide Registry of Per-Diem Court Interpreters and Interpretation/Translation Agencies, coordinates the UCS Remote Interpreting program, assists with testing and screening of new applicants, provides training for interpreters, addresses complaints or concerns about interpreters, and develops techniques for improving the delivery of language services to court users.

The court system has provided interpreters in over 100 languages, including but not limited to the following languages: Albanian, Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Croatian, Dutch, French, Greek, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Polish, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Urdu and Woloff.
