Thomas J.K. Smith was appointed 28th State Reporter of New York by the Court of Appeals effective August 15, 2024. Before his appointment, Smith was a trial and appellate lawyer in federal and state courts, practicing in criminal defense, tax, customs and international trade, and commercial law. Smith received his B.S. in Accounting from the University of Delaware and his J.D. and LL.M. (taxation) from New York University School of Law. He is a certified public accountant (inactive) and a member of the bars of New York, New Jersey, and the District of Columbia. At Marymount Manhattan College in New York, Smith was an adjunct professor of business law, macroeconomics, financial accounting, and college writing. He is the author of the legal treatise, International Trade Law Answer Book (Practicing Law Institute 2017). Smith is honored to lead the distinguished and dedicated staff of the New York State Law Reporting Bureau.
