Notice to the Bar – Amendments to Rules of Practice – Amicus Curiae |
After considering public comment received, the Court of Appeals has amended its Rules of Practice relating to amicus curiae relief, effective May 8, 2024. The Court’s Notice to the Bar summarizes the changes and explains how the amendments to the timing requirements for amicus curiae motions will be implemented. Notice to the Bar – Amendments to Rules for the Admission of Attorneys and Counselors at Law |
The Court has amended its Rules for the Admission of Attorneys and Counselors at Law (Part 520), effective May 8, 2024, to more closely align with the American Bar Association’s Standards for the Approval of Law Schools. Among other changes, the Court amended the definition of distance learning and added a provision to this definition indicating that the remote participation in a non-distance education course by a student as an accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act or any other law requiring an accommodation will not cause the course to count toward the distance education credit limits for the accommodated student. Waiver of Strict Compliance – Rule 520.6 |
The Court has issued an order waiving strict compliance with certain provisions of Section 520.6 of the Rules for the Admission of Attorneys and Counselors at Law (22 NYCRR 520.6) relating to the distance education prohibition for foreign law study for certain foreign law graduates enrolled in a classroom-based course during the Spring of 2020 through the Spring of 2022 semesters. Legal Education Update |
The Court of Appeals has issued an order waiving strict compliance with certain distance learning limitations and restrictions of sections 520.3 and 520.6 of the Rules for the Admission of Attorneys and Counselors at Law (22 NYCRR 520.3 and 520.6) applicable, in limited circumstances, when students and faculty who are subject to mandatory COVID-19 quarantine requirements attend in-person courses remotely or when a student has been granted an accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act permitting the student to attend in-person courses remotely. The order applies to the 2023-2024 academic year. A copy of the order can be accessed here. |

Notice to the Bar |
The Court has amended its Rules for the Admission of Attorneys and Counselors at Law (Part 520, Rule 520.17). Under the newly amended rule, a Pro Bono Scholar may complete a portion of the program during the fall semester immediately preceding the participant’s final semester of law study. However, credit for the work may not be awarded until the entire program is completed. The rule amendment is effective October 4, 2023.
