Civil Court of the City of New York
Judge Ally is currently the Administrative Judge of New York County Civil Court. He previously held the position of Supervising Judge of New York County Civil Court, making him the first South Asian Supervising Judge (or Judge in any administrative role) in New York State history. He previously served as the President of the Asian American Judges Association of New York (a statewide association advocating for the inclusion and advancement of AAPI Judges in our state’s court system) as well as the Co-Chairperson of the New York State Permanent Commission on Access to Justice (a statewide Commission with the mission to expand access to civil legal services and improve access to justice generally).
Judge Shahabuddeen A. Ally is an elected New York City Civil Court Judge. Elected in New York County in November 2018, he is the only candidate to ever be reported as “Most Highly Qualified” from three separate screening panels in one year. Judge Ally is also the first Muslim male Judge elected in New York State history.
Judge Ally received his J.D. from Hofstra University School of Law in 2001. He began his legal career as a staff attorney with the New York City Administration for Children’s Services and then went to work for the New York City Law Department as an Assistant Corporation Counsel.
For over a decade, Judge Ally operated his own law practice specializing in family and criminal law. He also worked as a Public Defender, providing legal services to indigent litigants in Family, Criminal and Supreme Courts.
Judge Ally is a firm believer in public and community service. Prior to joining the judiciary, he served his Upper Manhattan neighborhood as the Chairman of Manhattan Community Board 12, Washington Heights, and Inwood. Today, Judge Ally sits on the Fort Tryon Park Trust, where he is the Chairperson of the Dog Run committee (he’s also the only member of this committee).
Judge Ally was born in Guyana, South America and came to the United States in 1981. He grew up in the South Bronx, attended local public schools, and continues to believe in the pursuit of the American dream.
Judge Ally resides in Upper Manhattan with his wife, their son, and puppy, Mister Bear.
