Types of Visitation

Visits can be unsupervised, supervised, or therapeutically supervised. "Supervised" means that court has ordered that someone else be there during a visit between a parent and a child. This is done if the Judge finds evidence that the child would be in danger by being alone with a parent.

Visits can be unsupervised, supervised, or therapeutically supervised, and may also involve a safe place of exchange or a monitored exchange:

• Supervised Visits. This is when the court will choose someone to be there during a visit between a parent and a child. This person can be from an agency or someone who the parents agree on.
• Therapeutic Supervised Visits. This is when a mental health professional is there during a visit between a parent and a child. This person tries to improve the parenting skills of the parent during the visit.

The court can also order that the child be picked up and dropped off in a neutral place so that the parents will have little contact with each other. Usually the neutral place is a police station or some other safe place.

In some cases, the court can order a "monitored exchange". This means that someone else is there when the child goes from one parent to the other for a visitation. This is to make sure that the situation is calm and safe for the child.
