Overview
County Courts, City Courts, and Town and Village Courts share authority to handle trials in misdemeanor cases and other minor offenses. But only County Courts have the authority to conduct trials in felony matters. County Courts also have limited authority over cases involving claims up to $25,000.

In Suffolk County, applications for Temporary Extreme Risk Protection Orders may be filed in Suffolk County Court, Special Term Office during business hours, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Persons who wish to file an off-hours (i.e. Nights, Weekends, Court Holidays) Temporary Extreme Risk Protection Order application should contact the Suffolk County Police Department by calling 911. In the alternative, call the Office of Court Administration emergency telephone No.: 1-800-430-8457.
