Overview

District Courts are located in Nassau County and Suffolk County. They decide civil suits involving claims up to $15,000, handle misdemeanors and lesser offenses, and arraign defendants accused of felonies.

The District Court has authority over four categories of cases, including civil and criminal matters. The court generally handles civil matters seeking monetary damages up to $15,000, small claims matters with monetary damages up to $5,000, commercial small claims matters with monetary damages up to $5,000, landlord and tenant matters concerning housing proceedings and evictions.

The District Court has authority to hear criminal matters involving trial jurisdiction over misdemeanors, violations and infractions, preliminary jurisdiction over felonies and traffic tickets charging a crime.
