Question:    May a part-time town justice accept employment as a security guard/usher for university sports games in a neighboring county?

Discussion:  We have previously advised that a part-time judge may engage in security-related employment that does not involve law enforcement activity and does not otherwise create an appearance of impropriety (Opinion 20-54 [security manager for local racetrack]).  Thus, you may accept a position as a campus security guard/usher that does not confer peace officer status or the authority to make arrests, provided you disqualify yourself from any proceeding that involves the university (Opinions 15-158 [campus security officer]; 11-11 [warehouse security guard]).
