Opinion:

            A judge inquires whether it is permissible to accept an invitation involving participation in a mission to the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., as a guest of a regional Institute on the Holocaust and the Law as well as a law school, the purpose which is to study and analyze the role of the law and legal institutions during the Holocaust and its aftermath.

            Section 100.4(A)(1) of the Rules Governing Judicial Conduct provides, that a judge may participate in extra-judicial activities, so long as such participation does not "cast reasonable doubt on the judge's capacity to act impartially as a judge".
 

            In light of the avowed purpose of the mission, the judge's participation therein would not cast reasonable doubt on his or her capacity to act impartially as a judge. Accordingly, the judge may accept the invitation.
