Rules:
22 NYCRR 100.4(C)(3)(b)(i)
Opinion:
A part-time judge inquires whether it is permissible to serve as a clothing fashion model at a local charitable event. The judge will not be identified as a judge nor will there be involvement in the collection of money for the charity.
Section 100.4(C)(3)(b)(i) of the Rules Governing Judicial Conduct states
that a judge "shall not personally participate in the solicitation of funds
or other fund-raising activities." In the view of the Committee, the role
of the judge at the event would constitute being an active participant
in a fund-raising activity. Certainly, the probability of being identified
in the community as a judge is quite substantial. Therefore, participation
as contemplated is impermissible.
