Digest: A judge serving as co-chair of a law school alumni association annual luncheon may send a letter to other judges informing them of the event and requesting their participation.
Rule: 22 NYCRR 100.5
Opinion:
A full-time judge serves as co-chair of a law school alumni association annual luncheon and wishes to send a letter to colleagues in the judiciary informing them of the event and requesting their "cooperation and participation in this event."
The Committee sees no ethical impediment to the sending of the proposed letter. There is no solicitation of funds involved which would be proscribed under Rule 100.5(b)(2), and the event is one in which judges as law school alumni could normally be expected to participate.
