Digest:         A recently elected judge may not attend a dinner sponsored by a political party at any time, even one day, after the six-month period following election.

Rules:          22 NYCRR §100.7(a)(1).

Opinion:

         A recently elected judge inquires whether the judge may attend a dinner sponsored by a political party held six months and one day after the general election.

         Section 100.7(a)(1) permits judges to attend politically sponsored dinners during a period beginning nine months before a primary election, and ending, "if the judge is a candidate in the general election for that office, six months after the general election."

          This Committee has no authority to interpret a rule which permits attendance at politically sponsored dinners within six months after election to mean six months plus one day. Accordingly, the judge may not attend this dinner.
