Digest: A part-time judge may serve as chair of the board of a military reunion group, but not as editor of its newsletter, if the newsletter is used for fundraising, and, as chair of the board, the judge may not permit the use of the judge's name for fundraising.
Rules: 22 NYCRR 100.5(b)(2)
Opinion:
A part-time judge asks whether it is permissible to serve as chair of the board of a military reunion group, and as editor of the group's newsletter, which contains fundraising features, although the fundraising is limited to the group's membership.
A judge may serve as chair of the board of a military reunion group, but may not serve as editor of its newsletter where the newsletter, is used, in whole or in part, for fundraising purposes. In addition, as chair of the board, the judge may not permit the use of the judge's name in any fundraising activities.
