Opinion 18-146
January 9, 2019
Dear :
This responds to your inquiry (18-146) asking if you need to take any further steps besides objecting orally and in writing, withdrawing from participation as honoree, and requesting notification of invitees, after discovering a parade committee used your name, without your knowledge or consent, to solicit journal ads to raise funds for an upcoming holiday parade and celebration.
We have advised a judge, who learns his/her name is being used improperly in connection with charitable fund-raising, must object in writing and, depending on the facts, may need to take added steps (see Opinion 17-78; 07-80). As you already have, the committee sees no further actions are needed.
Enclosed, for your convenience, are Opinions 17-78 and 07-80,for your review, which address this issue.
Very truly yours,
George D. Marlow, Assoc Justice
