Opinion 05-153
January 26, 2006
Digest: A judge may attend a union sponsored dinner and place an ad in the dinner journal.
Rule: 22 NYCRR 100.4(A). Opinions 92-70 (Vol. IX); 94-25 (Vol. XII).
Opinion:
A judge asks whether it is proper to attend a dinner sponsored by a union local and to place an ad in the dinner’s “souvenir booklet.”
This Committee has previously stated that a Judge may attend a civic dinner, and participate to the extent of buying an ad in the dinner journal, so long as the Judge is not otherwise involved in any fund-raising. This is permissible extra-judicial activity, as it does not involve the judge in fund-raising or any other prohibited activity. 22 NYCRR 100.4(A), Opinions 92-70 (Vol. IX), 94-25 (Vol. XII).
