In June 2020, then-Governor of New York Andrew M. Cuomo signed an executive order declaring Juneteenth (June 19) a holiday for state employees. In 2021, legislation was passed that marked Juneteenth as an official state-paid holiday. When I was growing up in New York City in the 1970's, I was not aware of Juneteenth. It wasn’t until I went to college in Washington D.C. that many of my Southern classmates would speak reverently about “Juneteenth” as the day when African Americans truly received emancipation from slavery. On April 19, two LGBTQ judges sat together on the NYS Court of Appeals for the first time in the court’s 176-year history. Fittingly, it was also the day when the portrait of the late Judge Paul Feinman, the first openly gay judge on the Court, was unveiled. The 2nd Annual UCS Diversity & Inclusion Summit was held on Teams on Thursday, April 28, 2022, and nearly 800 judges and court employees attended the program! The theme for the 2022 Summit – “Words Matter: Language as a Tool to Break Down Barriers and Build Bridges” – explored the power of words, how the words we use affect how we act, and how others react.
