Phyllis Gangel -Jacob Appointed to Appellate Term of the Supreme Court for the First Judicial Department
NEW YORK - Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman today announced, with the approval of the Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division, First Department, Betty Weinberg Ellerin, the appointment of Justice Phyllis Gangel-Jacob to the Appellate Term of the Supreme Court for the First Judicial Department. The court has jurisdiction over appeals from the New York City Criminal and Civil Courts.

Since 1989 Justice Gangel-Jacob has been a State Supreme Court Justice in Manhattan, where she has presided over matrimonial matters, as well as cases involving the City of New York. She was elected to the New York City Civil Court in 1985, after nearly two decades of private practice. Justice Gangel-Jacob chairs the Judicial Section of the New York County Lawyers Association and is the vice-president and president-elect of the New York State Women Judges Association. A graduate of Brooklyn College and New York University Law School, Justice Gangel-Jacob is married to Bernard E. Jacob, the Alexander M. Bickel Distinguished Professor of Communications Law at Hofstra University Law School.

The appointment takes effect immediately.
