NEW YORK - Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman today designated Hon. Martin E. Smith as Supervising Judge of the Criminal Term, Sixth Judicial District, and as Acting Justice of the Supreme Court. The appointment takes effect Wednesday, March 14, 2007.
Judge Smith has been a Broome County Court Judge since 1990. Prior to his ascension to the bench, he served in the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office as Deputy Chief of the Frauds Bureau and in the Broome County District Attorney’s Office as Senior Assistant District Attorney. Judge Smith then entered private practice, serving as counsel to the law firms of Griffen and Smith, and Palmer, Hankin, Payton and Smith. In 1988, he became an adjunct professor within the Criminal Justice Program at Binghamton University. Justice Smith has served on the Commission on the Future of Indigent Defense Services and the Jury Trial Project, and is a member of the Broome County and New York State Bar Associations. He earned his Juris Doctor at Syracuse University College of Law.
