To make the Committee's opinions more accessible, we have posted a few educational and reference materials on selected topics (such as judicial speech and civic and charitable activities). We hope to address additional topics in the future.

Recurring Educational Programs

The following categories of judicial ethics education programs are typically offered every year and include faculty from the Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics.   • Judicial Campaign Ethics Training.
    Target Audience: All candidates for elective judicial office.
    Timeframe: Ongoing via online video.
    • Candidates seeking state-paid elective judicial office must complete this program no later than 30 days after receiving the nomination for judicial office.  For those running in a primary election, the date of nomination is defined as "the date upon which the candidate files a designating petition with the Board of Elections." Written proof of compliance must be filed with the Judicial Campaign Ethics Center within 14 days of completing the training, unless the candidate is granted a waiver of this requirement for good cause shown. 
    • Candidates seeking town or village justice positions are encouraged, but not required, to take the training.

    Note: The program is typically recorded once per year (April-July) and we welcome a "live" audience of judicial candidates when circumstances permit.  Interested candidates may call for details.  
     
  • Ethics Update for Judges and Justices.
    Target Audience: All state-paid judges and justices.

  • Part I & Part II Ethics Training for Town and Village Justices.
    Target Audience: Town and Village Justices.
    Timeframe:  The Core A and Core B programs are traditionally presented in-person at the Association of Towns convention (February), the NYSMA convention (September), and at other times and locations determined by the Office of Justice Court Support.

  • Taking the Bench: Ethics (Justice Court)
    Target Audience: For Newly Elected and Appointed Town and Village Justices.
    Timeframe: Following Spring and Fall Elections.

  • Winding Down Your Law Practice (New Full-Time Judges Only)
    Target Audience: For Newly Elected and Appointed Full-Time Judges only.
    Timeframe: Traditionally offered in November/December.

  • New Judges Seminar: Ethics (New State-Paid Judges Only)
    Target Audience: For Newly Elected and Appointed State-Paid Judges only.
    Timeframe: Traditionally offered in JanuarySpecial arrangements may be made for mid-year appointees.
