Everything you need to know about becoming a judge

For thirty years, the Franklin H. Williams Judicial Commission has sought to remediate the lack of diversity across all job titles in the New York court system, including the judiciary.

During May and June 2021, the Franklin H. Williams Judicial Commission co-sponsored a two-part virtual program titled “Everything You Need to Know About Becoming a Judge” with the Amistad Long Island Black Bar Association, Long Island Hispanic Bar Association, Nassau County Bar Association, Nassau County Women’s Bar Association, National Association of Women Judges – New York Chapter, New York State Judicial Committee on Women in the Courts, Puerto Rican Bar Association, and The Richard C. Failla LGBTQ Commission.

Part one covered securing the nomination in Supreme Court, along with the appointment process for New York State Court of Claims, Federal Magistrate Judges, and District Court Judges. Commissioner Thomas J. Garry, Esq., Harris Beach, PLLC, and Dorian R. Glover, President, Nassau County Bar Association, provided the welcome and introductory remarks during part one. The moderators were Hon. Helen Voutsinas, Supreme Court Justice, Nassau County, and Thomas J. Garry, Esq. The panelists for part one included: Hon. Jay Jacobs, Chairman of the New York State and Nassau County Democratic Party Committees, DNC Member, Hon. Joseph G. Cairo, Jr., Chairman of the Nassau County Republican Committee, Hon. Norman St. George, Administrative Judge of the 10th Judicial District, Justice of the Supreme Court, and Hon. Hector D. LaSalle, Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, Second Department.

Part two provided an overview of election law and related ethical requirements, judicial rules, and how to make the ballot in Supreme, City, County, Town, and Family Courts. Thomas J. Gary, Esq. and Liza Milgrim-Reyes, Esq., provided the welcome and introductory remarks for part two. The moderators were Hon. Linda K. Mejias, Judge, New York State Court of Claims, and Paul Kenny, Esq., Chief Clerk, Appellate Term, Second Department, FHW Commission Member.

The panelists who discussed election law and related ethical requirements were Hon. Edward P. Borelli, Chair, Judicial Campaign Ethics Subcommittee of the New York State Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics, Counsel, McCarthy Fingar LLP, and Hon. Paul Wooten, Associate Justice, Appellate Division, Second Department. The group of panelists discussing the topic of making the ballot in Village, County, and Family Courts were Keith M. Corbett, Esq., Nassau County Democratic Committee Law Chair, and John E. Ryan, Esq., Nassau County Republican Committee Law Chair.
