Special Masters Program

In 2021, the Franklin H. Williams Commission relaunched the Special Masters Program to train attorneys from underrepresented communities to manage cases in the Courts as a Special Master in New York County. Its purpose is to create a pipeline for attorneys of color and other underrepresented communities, to volunteer in the courts and become judges.

Special Masters will work closely with an assigned Justice of the Supreme Court and assist with various tasks based on the needs of the Court. Tasks may include handling discovery conferences, settlement conferences, conducting legal research, drafting memos of law advising the Court on pretrial and trial issues, and preparing written recommendations on motions.

The relaunched Special Masters Program is a partnership between the New York County Lawyers Association, the Franklin H. Williams Judicial Commission, and the Unified Court System.
