In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the Franklin H. Williams Judicial Commission partnered with the New York State Unified Court System’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Asian American Judges Association of New York, the South Asian Bar Association of New York, the Asian Jade Society of the New York State Courts, the Asian American Bar Association of New York, and the Network of Bar Leaders to present an event at the New York County Supreme Court’s Rotunda, entitled Cultivating Leaders to Stand Against Hate.

The event featured trailblazing leaders from the judiciary, local community, and U.S. Congress for a discussion on developing leaders to stand against racial violence. Key speakers included U.S. Representative Grace Meng, the first and only Congressmember from New York of Asian American descent; New York City Councilmember Sandra Ung; Orange County Judge Hyun Chin Kim; Professor Mary Szto of Syracuse University College of Law; and Co-Executive Director of the Coalition for Asian American Children and Families, Vanessa Leung. As Chief Judge Janet DiFiore noted in her opening remarks, although the program was “first conceived in response to the rise in violent attacks against Asian Americans” the program’s “universal call for leadership against hate” is relevant for every community.
