The Franklin H. Williams Judicial Commission held its inaugural Professional Development Academy on Wednesday, May 11 and Thursday, May 12. The program participants were 26 non-judicial personnel, in grades 12 through 21, from the Twelfth and Ninth Judicial Districts. The program took place at the New York State Judicial Institute and included sessions with training on cover-letter and resume writing, the interview process, presentation and public speaking skills, as well as networking and mentorship. At the conclusion of the program, the participants expressed overwhelming gratitude for the knowledge and training they acquired over the 2 days of intensive sessions. The Williams Commission is also appreciative of the support of our partners in developing the program, including Tony Walters and the Office of Workforce Diversity and Inclusion, Dean Davidson and the New York State Judicial Institute, and the Division of Human Resources’ Training and Professional Development Office. Special thanks to Raquel Aracena and Daniel Santiago-Stewart, our trainers, and our guest speakers, Dr. Betty Campbell, Lakisha Hickson and Omar Cumberbatch.
The positive impact of the Professional Development Academy will continue to reverberate throughout the court system. The Williams Commission plans to replicate the program in upstate New York this fall. We are confident that the Professional Development Academy will be a pipeline for increased diversity in leadership positions throughout New York State.
