In July 2021, the Williams Commission hosted a closing ceremony to commemorate the conclusion of the Summer Internship Program. The eight-week program was an opportunity for law school and college students to work with judges and court leaders throughout New York State. The interns used their writing and research skills to develop programs addressing diversity in the legal profession and to eradicate systemic racism from the courts. Interns worked on issues involving jury diversity, implicit bias, and equal access to justice, and also participated in a meet and greet with judges and court leaders.
During the closing ceremony, the law students spoke about the impact of the internship on their perception of the legal system. The Commission Co-Chairs provided certificates to each of the students. The law school interns included: Joel A. Ferreira, Touro College, Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center; Shiddhartha Uddin, Maurice A. Dean School of Law at Hofstra University; Samantha Ladines, Elizabeth Haub School of Law; Olivia Yoon, Cardozo School of Law, Olivia Johnson, Fordham University School of Law. The college interns included: Ivan Daquial, University at Albany, State University of New York, through the Sonia and Celina Sotomayor Internship Program and Umadai Guayadin, St. John’s University.
The Commission will continue its Summer Internship Program in 2022.
