Director's Message:

Tony WaltersGreetings, Court Family! By the time you read this message, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) will have recently concluded our 3rd Diversity and Inclusion Summit. This year’s Summit engendered thought-provoking presentations and conversations around the workplace dynamics of intersectionality and allyship. One of the many takeaways from the 2023 Summit was this quote by one of our keynote speakers, Diya K. Wynn: “I am more than the skin I’m in, my birthplace, my education, my mistakes, my past, my adversity, my aspirations and your misperceptions.”

If you were not able to attend the Summit on June 8, a link to the virtual recording will be available shortly on the ODI intranet site: inside-UCS.org: Office of Diversity & Inclusion

Monday, June 19th is the recently enacted Federal Holiday
Juneteenth.” To learn more about this very important holiday, please visit the Smithsonian Museum website at: https://nmaahc.si.edu/explore/stories/historical-legacy-juneteenth. For a more-personal take on Juneteenth, read the article by OCA’s Glen Parker within this issue of the newsletter.

After an atypically arduous and delayed process, ODI and the Unified Court System extend a warm welcome to our new Chief Judge of the State of New York, Rowan D. Wilson, and I know that you will enjoy the insightful interview with Chief Judge Wilson in our “Changemaker” segment of Mosaic. Along with newly appointed Chief Administrative Judge Joseph A. Zayas, First Deputy Chief Administrative Judge Norman St. George, and the rest of our judicial leadership, the Unified Court System stands committed to eradicating discrimination and bias, overseeing equal justice under the law, and fostering a work environment where all are heard and valued.

Last, but certainly not least, I encourage you to attend some of the many Pride Month programs that are being held in June. ODI celebrates the history and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community, with our partners the Richard C. Failla LGBTQ Commission, The Pride Alliance, and many others within our UCS family.  As stated by Charlie Arrowood, Senior Counsel to the Richard C. Failla LGBTQ Commission, who is featured on a recent Diversity Dialogues podcast: “If you can make one small move on the rare occasion you interact with a trans person–calling them ‘them,’ the name they want to be called, or coming to their defense if something is harmful that's going on, that helps us survive…”

Happy Juneteenth, and Happy Pride!

Thank you.

Tony Walters
