Director's Message:
Hello everyone. I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the second anniversary of the Report from the Special Adviser on Equal Justice in the New York State Courts, and offer my observations on some of the amazing progress we have achieved as a court family to address institutional racism and inequity in our court system:
Under the committed and passionate day-to-day leadership of Deputy Chief Administrative Judge Edwina Mendelson, and others (including the Office of Diversity and Inclusion), the second anniversary of the report has seen the flourishing of Equal Justice Committees across the state, the initial roll-out of mandated anti-bias training, national recognition of our equal justice efforts, and integration of the Special Bias Panels -- comprised of DCAJ’s Mendelson, Kaplan and St. George and the Director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. All this work is a continuation of acknowledging and including the myriad cultural backgrounds of employees that indeed form the foundation of our gorgeous “Mosaic.”
Other highlights include but are not limited to, the transparent reporting of judicial and non-judicial demographic information, highlighting the work of the Managing Inspector General for Bias Matters, creation of an anti-bias juror orientation video, and adoption of an articulated social media policy. If you would like additional information about any of the topics I have mentioned, please contact my office at diversity@nycourts.gov and we will direct you to information and resources from the UCS Divisions, Offices and Units who manage these areas.
Let’s be clear, it has taken this nation 400+ years to fortify, and in many cases codify, the systemic racism, inequality, and uneven distribution of justice that we are now mandated to deconstruct, and hopefully eradicate, in our state court system. We have significant challenges ahead of us. However, the commitment of our leadership to address these challenges remains unwavering. Lastly, we cannot complete this mission alone, it will require the resolve and inclusion of our entire court family. I encourage all members of our UCS family to continue these efforts together.
