Hispanic Heritage Month:
Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and HOPE! In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI), Cervantes Society and Latino Court Officers Society hosted a widely-attended program and panel discussion, on September 14. The virtual program served as the UCS “kick-off” event for many local court celebrations of Hispanic Heritage Month, which is observed annually from September 15-October 15.
This year’s national theme of Heritage and Hope was addressed during a lunchtime program that included employees from around the state. Joining Chief Judge DiFiore to welcome everyone to the event were Sylvia Miranda, President of the Cervantes Society, and Sergeant Jessica Hernandez from the Latino Court Officers Society; Cervantes and LCOS were co-sponsors of this cultural celebration, with ODI.
The program included a lively panel discussion that was moderated by Dan Santiago-Stewart of ODI, and panel members Ana Brignoni-Waliczek (8th JD), Cristine Fredericks (NYC Civil Court) and Lisa Zayas (Access to Justice). The panelists shared their experiences, and how their heritage contributes to their identity, as well as a hopeful outlook. The program was recorded and is available for viewing on the ODI intranet page: http://inside-ucs.org/oca/workforce-diversity/newsandevents.shtml
