Positions: Judge Rivera has filled all law clerk positions through the 2022 term.

Applications for the 2022/23 term clerkships to begin in August 2022 should be submitted between January 1, 2020 and May 31, 2020.

Description: Law Clerks prepare legal memoranda and bench reports for the Judge on civil and criminal matters pending before the Court.  They also assist as needed with research on legal topics of interest to the profession and the general public, to be referenced by the Judge at professional meetings and in scholarly publications.  The position is based in New York City, with overnight travel to Albany when the Court is in session, approximately fifty days per term.

Qualifications: Successful applicants will have excellent research and writing skills, work well independently, and demonstrate a commitment to professionalism, honesty, the independent and impartial administration of justice, and the advancement of public confidence in the rule of law and the judiciary.  The Judge welcomes applications from current second- and third-year law students, recent law graduates, and practicing attorneys.

Timing: Clerkships begin in August, and run for one or two calendar years.  Interviews and offers may be extended at any time.

Materials: Applicants should submit a cover letter, writing sample, most recent law school transcript, resume, and at least two letters of recommendation, including one from a legal employer or supervisor, attesting to the applicant's ability to produce professional-level work on short deadlines. Materials should be submitted electronically, as one pdf document. Recommendations may be sent under separate cover, via email to Azahar LaPorte.

Externships: Second- and third-year law students may apply for judicial externships in Judge Rivera’s New York City Chambers during the fall and spring semesters, as well as over the summer.  Interested law students should submit a cover letter, writing sample, most recent law school transcript, resume, and contact information for two references, at least one of whom should be a current or former law professor.  Externship applications are due July 1st for the following fall, November 1st for the spring, and February 1st for the summer, and should be submitted exclusively as an emailed attachment to Ms. LaPorte.
