The Harlem
Community Justice Center and the Red Hook Justice
Center were established to bring the court and community
together to solve local problems. The Justice Centers
accomplish this goal by having one judge handle multi-jurisdictional
issues in a single courtroom. These courts seek to
bring on-site social services to the court to address
litigants' underlying social issues which have
lead to their legal problems.
The Harlem Community Justice
Center handles all types of residential landlord and
tenant issues from buildings in Harlem zip-codes 10035
and 10037. This court also has a youth court and will
handle family law issues.
The Redhook Justice Center handles
housing cases from New York City Housing Authority
Red Hook East and Red Hook West developments. The
Redhook court was the nation's first multi-jurisdictional
community court and handles criminal and family cases
in addition to housing cases.
