Youthful Offender Domestic Violence Courts

Welcome

To address the issues facing adolescent defendants accused of domestic violence, New York State established three youthful offender domestic violence (YODV) courts to serve jurisdictions with high caseloads. These courts operate on the DV court model but are limited to cases involving defendants aged 16 through 19. One of their goals is to address violent tendencies in teens early, before this behavior becomes an entrenched part of their relationships. Through the use of programs aimed at teens, closer engagement and consistency on the part of the judge and appropriate advocacy for the mostly-teen complaining witnesses, YODV courts adapt the DV model to the circumstances of teen defendants.
