Honorable Mark C. Dillon, Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department, recently authored an article entitled “A New York State of Mind: The Cases and Career of U.S. Chief Judge John Jay.” The article, which appears in the May 2018 edition of the New York State Bar Journal, analyzes the seven cases that John Jay presided over during his tenure as the Nation’s first Chief Judge between 1789 and 1795, and the manner in which they reflect the issues facing the United States at that time. Justice Dillon is no stranger to historical legal writings, having authored a critically-acclaimed book entitled “The Montana Vigilantes 1863-1870: Gold, Guns and Gallows” several years ago.
