Car
- From Syracuse and points West: Go North
on I-81 to Exit 48, then East on NY 342 to junction with US
11. Turn left
(North) on US 11, through Gouverneur to Canton, about 63 miles
on 2-lane road. In the village of Canton Route11 turns right
(East). Continue on Route 11 to the main intersection at the
top of the hill. Turn left onto Court St., go two blocks, and
park in the large lot just past the main court buildings. The
road time from Syracuse to Canton is about 2-1/4 hours.
- From Albany, Saratoga Springs, Lake George, Glens Falls,
Warrensburg, Indian Lake, Blue Mountain Lake, Long Lake or
Tupper Lake: Go North on I-87 to the Warrensburg
exit, then West on US 9 into Warrensburg. Continue north and west on US 9,
then turn left (West) onto NY 28, and follow this to Indian Lake, where the route
is joined by NY 30 coming in from the left (South). Stay
on NY 30 straight (West) through Indian Lake, Blue Mountain
Lake, Long Lake and Tupper Lake. In Tupper Lake turn left
onto NY 3. Proceed along Route 3, through Childwold to the
intersection with NY 56 at Sevey's Corners. Turn right onto
Route 56 and head north through South Colton. Continue North
until you reach the intersection with NY 68 at Colton. Turn
left onto Route 68 and continue through Pierrepont and into
Canton. Route 68 intersects US 11. Turn left onto Route 11
(a golf course and the Best Western University Inn is on
the left). Proceed to first traffic light. Turn right onto
Court Street and go two blocks. Courthouse is on the right.
- Alternate route from Albany: Take I-87 North to Pottersville,
Exit 26. Turn right on Route 9 and go North about 3/4 mile.
Turn to left (Road forks at Wells House Hotel, Rt 9 bears right).
Go to Olmstedville. Continue through Olmstedville until road
intersects with Route 28N. Turn right onto Route 28N and proceed
North through Minerva, Newcomb and into Long Lake. At Long
Lake turn right onto Route 30. Proceed North on Route 30 to
Tupper Lake. In Tupper Lake turn left onto Route 3. Proceed
along Route 3, through Childwold to the intersection of Route
56 at Sevey's Corners. Turn right onto Route 56 and head north
through South Colton. Continue North until you reach the intersection
of Route 68 at Colton. Turn left onto Route 68 and continue
through Pierrepont and into Canton. Route 68 intersects Route
11. Turn left onto Route 11 (a golf course and the Best Western
University Inn is on the left). Proceed to first traffic light.
Turn right onto Court Street and go two blocks. Courthouse
is on the right.
- From Malone, Plattsburgh, and Burlington go west
on US 11 to Malone, then West on US 11 or NY 11B to Potsdam,
then West on US 11 to Canton. Turn right (North) at main intersection
(a large park is on your left) onto Court St., go two blocks
and park in large lot just past the Courthouse.
- From Ottawa, Ontario: Go South on 416 (4-lane) to
Johnstown/Prescott, cross bridge to Ogdensburg, NY. At intersection
with NY 37 turn right (West) and continue to intersection with
NY 68. Turn left (Southeast) onto NY 68 to Canton (19 miles).
At the main intersection traffic light at the top of the hill
turn left (North) onto Court St., go two blocks and park in
large lot just past the Courthouse. Note: US Customs & Border
Protection may require proof of citizenship or other documentation at
the border, even for US citizens.
By Bus
Daily bus service is available from Albany (Greyhound)
and Syracuse (Greyhound and Adirondack Trailways), with a depot
within walking distance of the courthouse.
By Air
Regional airports in Syracuse NY and
Ottawa, Ontario serve St. Lawrence County. Car rentals are available
at both airports. Approximate distances and travel times from
these airports to Canton, NY are:
- Syracuse: 137 miles, about 2-1/4 hours
- Ottawa: about 80 miles and 1-1/2 hours, allowing
for bridge and border crossing.
There is limited commuter airline service
from the south to Ogdensburg, Massena and Watertown, NY. Reportedly car
rentals are available through the use of a courtesy phone at the airports.
