Hon. Charles S. Lopresto

Justice Charles S. Lopresto was born in Astoria, Queens. He received his undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree from St. John’s University in 1977 and attended Pace University School of Law and received a Juris Doctor Degree in 1980. Thereafter, he was admitted to practice law in all the courts of the State of New York and before the United States Supreme Court.

Upon graduation from law school, Justice Lopresto entered the District Attorney’s Office of Queens County where he was assigned to the Special Victims Bureau. He later engaged in the private general practice of law. In 1982, Justice Lopresto began his career in the court system as a Law Clerk to Supreme Court Justice Charles H. Cohen with whom he worked from 1982 to 1995. In 1995, Justice Lopresto became Principal Court Attorney to the Supervising Judge of the Civil Court of the City of New York, Queens County, the Hon. Joseph J. Risi. He continued in the position from 1997 to 2006 as Principal Law Clerk to the Hon. Jeremy S. Weinstein, the Supervising Judge of the Civil Court of the City of New York, Queens County.

Justice Lopresto has been an active member of the Queens County Bar Association over the past 25 years and has served as a member of various committees, including the Supreme Court, Civil Court and Criminal Court Committees. He has lectured at the Queens County Bar Association as part of their continuing legal education program on various topics including Summary Jury Trials and at the Small Claims Arbitrator Training Program. He has also represented the Queens County Bar Association at the request of the Speakers Bureau as a guest lecturer at York College on the topic of negligence and liability. Justice Lopresto has lectured at Columbia University on the topics of constitutional and criminal law to the Columbia University Undergraduate Law Review. Justice Lopresto has been the recipient of a Certificate of Honor from the New York State Bar Association for his coordination and supervision of their Mock Trial Tournament Program. He has dedicated his time to serve as an Arbitrator in Small Claims Court prior to becoming a judge. He is a past President of the Long Island City Lawyers Organization and a past President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Columbian Lawyers Association of Queens County and is a member of the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Queens County.

In 2006, Justice Lopresto was elected a Judge of the Civil Court. He served his first year on the bench in Civil Court. In 2008 -2009 Justice Lopresto was assigned to Criminal Court, Queens County.

On June 18, 2009, Justice Lopresto was appointed to be the Supervising Judge of Civil Court of the City of New York, Queens County, and an Acting Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York by the Hon. Ann Pfau, Chief Administrative Judge of the Courts. He currently presides over the Trial Assignment Part 20 in Queens County.
